Cursive and Script Tattoo Fonts

Script fonts like Great Vibes, Pinyon Script and Allura give names and quotes a flowing, handwritten feel. Their thin hairlines look elegant at large sizes but can fade when tattooed small, so pair a script font with enough size and letter spacing. Use the spacing slider to open up tight joins before you download.

Gothic and Old English Tattoo Fonts

Blackletter fonts such as UnifrakturMaguntia, Fruktur, Jacquard 24 and Pirata One give names and mottos the classic Old English look of chest pieces and knuckle lettering. Their heavy strokes hold up well over time, but the tight inner shapes can close up when tattooed small, so keep gothic lettering at least a few centimeters tall and test capitals carefully: some letters look very different from the modern alphabet.

Name Tattoo Designs

Names and dates are the most personal tattoos, and the ones where spelling matters most. Type the exact text, check every accent and number in the preview, and download it as a transparent PNG to bring to your artist. Roman numerals and dot-separated dates work well in serif and old-school fonts.

Tattoo Lettering Ideas

Popular lettering tattoos include a child's or partner's name in a flowing script, a meaningful date written in Roman numerals or with dots, the coordinates of a special place, a single word such as "breathe" or "strength", and a short line from a song or poem. Short text reads best: one to four words is ideal for most placements. Try the same words in a script, a serif and an old-school font before you decide, because the style changes the mood as much as the words do.

Best Fonts for Small Tattoos

Wrist, finger and behind-the-ear tattoos leave little room, so choose fonts with open letter shapes and even stroke widths. Clean sans serifs like Josefin Sans and Quicksand, typewriter fonts like Courier Prime, and simple scripts stay readable at a small size, while fonts with very thin hairlines or dense blackletter detail can blur as the ink spreads. Add a little letter spacing with the slider, and ask your artist how small the text can safely go on your placement.

How to Choose a Tattoo Font

Match the font to the size: delicate scripts need room, while gothic and old-school letters stay readable smaller. Avoid letters that touch or close up, because ink spreads slightly over the years. Look at the whole word at the size it will be tattooed, and ask your artist to adjust spacing for your placement.
